It seems that one of the newest T.V. crazes has been reality shows about people who are trying to discover gold. Gold has always been a very valuable resource. People have been digging for gold in order to "get rich" for decades in the United States. Stop and imagine how you would react if you found a large amount of gold!!! Image what your face would look like when you found it!!! What would you do with all your riches? A man by the name James W. Marshal accidentally discovered gold while building a sawmill near Coloma, California on this very day (Jan. 24th) in the year 1848! James must have been quite excited to discover gold in his own backyard!!! It didn't take long before his secret was spreading across the United States. Everyone wanted a piece of the treasure Marshal had found and they rushed to California in search of great wealth. This time in history is accurately named the "Gold Rush." Before beginning today's journal I want you to read Chapter 2 in the book The California Gold Rush by Linda Thompson. In chaptertwo you will learn a little more about this great time in history.
